Introduction

Description
As part of the training series on digital tools for construction and the BIM method, this module presents the principles, techniques, and main applications of 3D scanning.
This training course provides an understanding of what a point cloud is, what it contains, its exchange formats, its limitations, and how it can serve as the basis for producing plans, 3D models, compliance checks, or as-built documents. It also covers software, costs, hardware requirements, and expected developments.
Objectives
By the end of the training, participants will be able to:
- Understand the operating principles of 3D scanning, LiDAR, and photogrammetry
- Select a technique and type of capture device based on the context and the expected level of accuracy
- Understand the main applications of 3D scanning in the construction industry: virtual tours, Scan-to-BIM, compliance checks, traceability, and as-built documentation
- Understand the steps in a Scan-to-BIM workflow, from data capture to point cloud processing
- Identify the constraints related to cost, file formats, software, and computing power associated with point clouds
